Reflection

1. Connect theory and practice so that each informs the other.

2. Take action and reflect on that action to improve teaching and learning.

3. Develop and articulate a personal philosophy grounded in HTH design principles.

User's Abstract

This user's abstract began my exploration in the HTH GSE program as a teacher researcher. Here I summarize, evaluate and reflect upon the article "If You Know Our Names it Helps! Students' perspectives about "good" teaching," written by Joanne Robertson. In order to be an effective teacher, it is so vital that we make the effort to really get to know our students as individuals. In this process of getting to know one another, we need to give our students opportunities to have a voice in the classroom.

Reflection: The Culture of Power at Keiller Leadership Academy

This chapter, The Silenced Dialogue from the book Other People's Children, written by L. Delpit, made me reflect on the consequences from the major transfer of power that occurred at my school, Keiller Leadership Academy. As the school broke away from the San Diego Unified School District four years ago and became its own independent Charter School, it slowly transformed from an extremely dangerous place to a safe learning environment where students now care about their education.

Reading Response: "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack," by Peggy McIntosh

As I read about the endless unseen privileges that white people are born with, I couldn't help but reflect upon the student population at Keiller and how many obstacles they are faced with everyday. This writing piece focuses on the media and the lack of positive representations of African Americans.

Reflecting on Cross Cultural Educational practices

In this response to Stevenson and Stigle's book, The Learning Gap, I reflect on the traditional "American" views on teaching and education in comparison to the educational expectations within an Asian culture. I connected this piece of reading with my prior experience with Lesson Study, a teacher reflection process founded in Japan.

Reflections from my Previous Years of Education

Adria Steinberg's book, Real Learning, Real Work: School-to-Work as High School Reform examines how Project Based Learning drives the curriculum at selected school models. Reading about these different reformed school models gave me the opportunity to reflect upon my own previous education and how this compares to my current teaching practices.
